"Big Magic" Read-Aloud Book Club

A shared reading session
Description
[Update, 24 Oct 2015: Venue of the read-aloud has been changed from Fort Canning Park to an indoor venue at 313@Somerset because of haze. Kindly contact organizers for further details]
  • Have you always wanted to read more?
  • Do you want to meet new people who like reading?
  • Want to be more creative in your day-to-day life?
If you said yes to any of these questions, join us as we take turns reading aloud from the first half of “Big Magic” by Elizabeth Gilbert, have discussions and enjoy the greenery of Fort Canning.

We would encourage anyone who is willing and able to participate in reading aloud, although you are most certainly welcome to just listen. Shared reading is a very special social experience.

What to bring:
  • A copy of "Big Magic", if you have one. Come anyway if you don't! It will not be necessary to have the book to participate in the read-aloud
  • A mat or blanket to sit upon
  • Sun protection, bug repellent
  • Water, snacks
[Update, 12 Oct 2015: In response to questions about the format of the event, we'll be reading aloud for about 2.5 hours with breaks and discussions in between. You can send us your questions at readaloudsg AT gmail DOT com or contact us via the "Contact Organizer" button.]

The book
“Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear” is best-selling author (“Eat, Pray, Love”) Elizabeth Gilbert's guide to living a more creative life, whether you are “professionally or exclusively devoted to the arts” or use creativity for your private amusement. By “creative living”, Gilbert means “living a life that is driven more strongly by curiosity than by fear”.

Some of the topics discussed include her creative process, facing fears and finding courage, her perspective on inspiration and ideas. Find out more about the book at the author's webpage.

About the book club
The Big Magic Read-Aloud Book Club is hosted by two avid readers, Debbie and Yun Qing, who aim to create a safe and non-judgemental environment in which people can come together to share their love for reading. We believe that being read to is immensely pleasurable, relaxing and perhaps therapeutic--and, we believe--not only for children's bedtimes!

Events will always be free to attend.

About your hosts

Debbie was born to creative parents and has never stopped creating. Her current interests are cooking with deliberate limitations (one pot, gas stove, boiling or steaming only), learning to sew from books and discovering Chinese opera.

Yun Qing’s creative journey started as child when she would make up stories to occupy herself. Today, she’s still making up stories but this time with a team of improvisers. Besides doing improv, she writes irregularly at her blog YQtravelling.com. Her first book “Your Big Break: The Guide to Leaving Your Job to Travel the World and Back” is available now.
